ETSY!!!!

Miss shopping on Etsy? Or maybe you do not know Etsy, but you are a lover of crafts and handmade, unique items?  Feel like you are missing the ability to shop in fun little boutiques for gift items and home decorating?

Well, let the trumpets sound...

You CAN shop on Etsy!

What Is Etsy? (from their website...)

Our mission is to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers.
Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice:
Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.

Where is Etsy?

The Etsy community spans the globe with buyers and sellers coming from more than 150 countries. Etsy sellers number in the hundreds of thousands.
If each of these sellers stood outside at night with a really bright flashlight pointed towards the sky, it might look something like the image below.

Many, if not most Etsy vendors will ship internationally, at rates that are frequently lower than regular retailers.  I also found that by running a search for vendors in Germany that Etsy had to limit my search results to 100!  And there are shops all over Europe... You can run your own search by using the link below...

http://www.etsy.com/shop_local.php?ref=fp_nav_local

here are just a couple shops I found (and love...)

I could easily go on and on...

Splurge on bags and shoes... and other fun stuff.

Just found this shop today in Nuermberg, which I must have walked past 100 times before... my eye caught these adorable shoes in the window, and voila!  new shop I love, and must post about!  Granted the price point was in the "splurge" category (for me anyway) but everybody gets a splurge every now and then, right?  And so much fun to look.  They have 2 "shops" in the same location; one with only shoes, and the other with handbags and other fun, funky trinkets and accessories.

Castros Bags & Lifestyle - faces Konigstr. just across the bridge from the Hauptmarkt.

I'm thinking they must have hired a new buyer since they took these pictures, because the shop has a totally different look and feel now.  Still lots of bags, but trendier ones, and lots more funky bits and bobs (change purses, baby shoes, plastic toys, notebooks, postcards, etc. lots of fun stuff!)  There seem to be more tables now, and they were just chock full of assorted eye candy.

The shoe store is through the passage on the river side of the building.  Prices start around 100 Euros.  Mens and womens.

Red Alert! Old El Paso at Rewe!!

Stop the Presses!!!!  SHRIEK!

My husband and I went in to Rewe, to pick up our weekend groceries today, and finally (after the usual go-rounds of "What do YOU want?"s) decided to have chicken quesadillas for dinner.  And just as we rounded the corner, lo and behold, here is the Old El Paso "guy" setting up a special display, with fajita samples simmering away on a hot plate!  Oh yeah.  (OK, I know it may not be the best, but it's better than 'En Rico' or whatever they had before!)

I asked the representative, and he said that it was being carried in all Rewes as far as he knew.

They have:

  • corn taco shells
  • flour tortillas - large and small
  • salsa
  • guacamole
  • con queso
  • refried beans
  • jalapeños
  • Taco seasoning
  • Guacamole seasoning
  • fajitas kits
  • burrito kits
  • taco kits
  • enchiladas kits
It certainly isn't cheap (6 large tortilla shells are 2.99) - but worth it if the craving is bad enough!!!

Benefit Concert for Japan - St Martha Kirche

The University of Nuremberg Music Department is hosting a Charity Concert (Hochschule fuer Musik in Nuernberg,) in aid of Japan,  this Saturday, 19:30 March 19th, at Martha Church in Nuremberg. Japanese students and teachers (Mariko Takazoe, Ai Koda, Tae Koseki, Arisa Kobayashi, C. New Family Magazine - FRITZI!

LOVE that name!  Fritzi is a new (free) magazine focusing on the family and family activities in the Herzogenaurach and greater Erlangen area.  I stumbled across it at my doctor's office last week, and was very impressed by what I found!  The copy I picked up is just the second issue, but on top of articles on various subjects (fun foods, baby toys, ADHS (ADHD,) etc.) it included a list of all the second hand basars in the area, which is definitely the best assembly of area basars I've seen in a single publication (29!!); and it has 6 full pages of activities for kids from March through May - from Erlangen to Herzo, to Hoechstadt and Neustadt a.d. Aisch; AND some great ideas for family outings... like the Wildpark Hundshaupten, a bicycle tour from Erlangen to Obermembach and some Biergarten tips...

I will be featuring some of the family activities as weekend ideas in later posts, but to check out the calendar as well as the rest of the magazine vistit their website www.familienmagazin-fritzi.de and download a copy at http://www.familienmagazin-fritzi.de/fritzi-hefte-zum-herunterladen/

Friends of Erlangen Library - Walk and Book Drive! Sunday!

This Sunday (the 6th)the Friends of Erlangen Library members are planning a 'book raising' event to acquire English language children's books for the Erlangen library. The aim of this charity is to create a well stocked English section in the city library in Erlangento benefit all of us. To this end, they have arranged a good Sunday morning walk for adults and kids. The 'price' of entry is to bring along five English books per family. (A small cash donation will suffice in lieu of five books, should your own book collection necessitate a good library stock....)

Please come out for this good cause, enjoy the weather and maybe meet some new faces!
The plan is to meet in the car-park in Atzelsberg beergarden at 10 00 and set off on the circular route which is highlighted in the attached photo from google maps. It should take between 90 minutes and 120 minutes and practically all of it is off road on cross-country paths. A good pair of walking shoes for adults and children is advisable as is a camera. On this walk you should see various wildlife including deer and hares in the woods, a horse farm, the smallest church in Franconia (and lets face it, there is some tough competition for that title) and the 'lake' in the quarry behind Marloffstein which is quite famous for its fossils . There are a few areas to stop along the way so maybe a flask of hot beverages would be a good idea. Afterwards we have reserved a room in Atzelsbergs for lunch which should start at approximately 11.30 to 12.00ish If the weather is anyway sunny - as I expect it to be - it is possible to sit outside in their grounds. This is a Nintendo-free walk!
