Schedule of Fests in the Erlangen - Hochstadt area in June.

For a list of Kirchweihe, Johannisfeuer and other Fests in the Erlangen - Hochstadt area, Kreislauf Magazin has compiled one in their latest issue.  You can find it by clicking on the link below and going to page 42.

Wondering what a Krichweih is????

"Kirchweih" (which is the formal German word), "Kerwa" and "Kärwa" (which are local Franconian dialect) all refer to an annual church festival to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the church. Often times the local brewery will brew a special beer and there is food, music, games, etc. It really is the equivalent of a town fair.

For more information on what a Johannisfeuer is... click here

There was also a Wandertag listed in Hessdorf - a Wandertag is a bit like a Volksmarch, or basically a day when the everybody gets together and goes for a long walk!  (I believe they have a 5, 10 or a 20k option.)  The afterwards, they have a Fest, of course.)

And I expect that Kreislauf Magazin will continue to list the Fests each month as the summer progresses.  We get it free in our mailbox, but apparently you can just look it up on line if you don't!

"Easter Fountains"

(Taken directly from Wikipedia...) The Franconian Switzerland (Frankische Schweiz) is the origin of the so-called Osterbrunnen. It describes the colorful decoration of public water wells during the Easter season. Today, more than 200 villages decorate their village well with colored easter eggs. The main reason for this custom is probably the significance of water for the arid high plateau of the Franconian Switzerland. The Bieberbach Osterbrunnen (Egloffstein) was admitted to the Guinness Book of Records as "the largest Osterbrunnen of the world".

We went to the Bieberbach well last year, and it was pretty impressive - thousands of eggs on a fountain in a little tiny town!  And the drive out there was a wonderful springtime weekend activity.

But if you don't have time, you can probably find some, just by driving out our way!  They're in lots of little towns!

From The Friends of the Library Erlangen...

1.COME SING AND READ TOGETHER Saturday, 31.3.12 from 10 am to 12pm

We are celebrating the International Mother Language Day and invite you to
a morning of song and dance and readings in English.

Australian children’s singer and songwriter Ben van Haeff will
entertain you with his wonderful songs from his new CD “Inside Out – This is my House”.
Ben is a locally based artist and works in English – you can learn more about him via his website
The concert is for all children between 3 and 7 years old including children who are learning or
want to learn English as a foreign language.

In addition to readings and singing we will have a fun “make an apple spiral” activity for the kids – with healthy apples to eat!
The idea, apples and “spiral maker” equipment have been provided by Moira Drexler, FOLE member and owner of a locally based
Jewellery and Gift business, Australiss. Australiss is a drop off point for any English book donations for the FOL,E and is
located at Friedrichstr. 6.

or received as donations will be showcased 3) Ben van Haeffs CDs will be available for sale
11.00 -12.00 Repeat program

2. ERLANGER FRÜHLING SUNDAY, 15.4.12 from 1pm to 6pm

We, Friends of the Library e.V., will be running an info stand at this year's "Erlanger Frühling" (spring Sunday shopping). This is an opportunity organised by the "Stadtverband der Erlanger Kulturvereine e.V.", of which we are a member, for the clubs and associations of Erlangen to present their work.

Our stand will be on the "Platz der Vereine" on the Neustädter Kirchenplatz from roughly 13.00 - 18.00. We will be directly next to the Church. There will be lots of other interesting events and lots for children (performances on stage, bouncy castle etc.), so we're in good company!

We will be looking for volunteers who would be prepared to spend an hour or so manning the stand: Perhaps you will be strolling through Erlangen anyway on that day and wouldn't mind giving up an hour of your time to tell people about the wonderful work you do - and enroll new members and/or ask for donations!

We will send round a google.doc link next week in which you can enter your name in one of the time slots. In the meantime, consider whether you could spare some time on that Sunday.

Easter Market in Herzo!

Easter Market

30 March to 1 April 2012

On the market square and on the castle courtyard

For several years now, the market has been growing and the number of booths has increased. Many guests bring their families and take a stroll through the market.
The Easter market has traditionally been opened by the INA-retirees for years. On 30 March 2012, from 10 am on, they will decorate the Georgsbrunnen (St. George Fountain) with easter eggs. At 11 am, the Mayor will officially open the Easter market with a greeting and a school class from an elementary school will accompany the opening with some songs of spring.
The Easter market is open daily from 10 am - 6 pm on the weekend.

Fondant in Erlangen!!! (And other great baking items!)

I happened to be in a kitchen store in Erlangen today, which I have been in several times, and for the first time noticed what a great selection of baking accessories and items they have.  Seeing this it occurred to me that they might at least know of where I might be able to buy fondant icing here in the area - so I asked.  Guess it was a good lesson in never hesitating to ask - because they told me that I could order it right there in the store!

They have a Backzubehor Gesamtkatalog (Complete catalog of Baking Accessories) which they can order from for anything that they do not have in stock.  And in this catalog is a selection of assorted colors of fondant icing in 250 gr. packets for 4.50 Euro, a few colors in 500 gr. packets for 6.50, and white in kilo packets for 11.00 Euro.  The gentleman said that it takes 10 days to arrive after you have placed your order. The catalog also has a great selection of cake tins and other decorating items including sugars, icing tips, fondant templates, etc.  And the store also has the best selection of decorating items I've seen to date!

The store is Greiner: Neues & Bewaehrtes, located at Hauptstr. 65 and 67 in Erlangen 91054

This is at eth far end of teh Hauptstrasse from the Arcaden, towards Martin Luther Platz, once the Hauptstrasse is no longer a walking area.  It is also a great kitchen store to boot!
